7 things on Sunday: ways to pass the time while home sick

Since I’ve been sick for the past three weeks with a pretty bad case of pneumonia, I thought I would list seven ways to pass the time while home sick.

1. Movies! Thank goodness we have the Xfinity X1 Platform with On Demand, it literally has thousands of movies to chose from.

2. Sleep. And lot’s of it.

3. Read. If you can! I started a book this week, but then the infection moved into my eyes. Making it hard for me to continue.

4. The internet. Thanks to email and Facebook, I still felt somewhat connected to the outside world while spending days upon days without leaving the house, or even my bed.

5. Planning. Laying in bed, not being able to work gave me some time to set a few goals. It also gave me time to plan a few steps in how to reach them.

6. Organize and clean out files. Just like house work without the physical strain, computer or even phone files need to be cleaned every now and then. If you’re like me it’s hard to find the time.

7. Snuggle. This is a favorite of mine. Our Basset Hound Roxy is a pro at snuggling. Our two cats aren’t too shabby either. When they want to that is.

How about you? Have something to add to my list? How do you pass the time while home sick?

Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real on Discovery Family Channel

From the origins of time, our world has been fascinated with dragons—ferocious, snake-like beasts with fiery tongues and powerful wings. This mythical monster appears all over the world, from Harry Potter novels and the Chinese New Year, to collegiate mascots and role-play board games. But what if these dragons were more than just legend? Watch dragons come to life in Discovery Family Channel’s DRAGONS: A FANTASY MADE REAL, a two-hour special that imagines what the world would be like if dragons did exist. Using stunning computer-generated imagery, along with true-biological science, viewers are given an exclusive look into dragons inside and out. Imagining everything from the different species of dragons, to their physical adaptations and behaviors, DRAGONS: A FANTASY MADE REAL tells the story of one of humankind’s oldest legends this Sunday, January 25 at 9/8c on Discovery Family Channel.

In this special, a team of fictional scientists are stunned when they discover a preserved dragon carcass hidden deep in a glacial ice cave in Romania. Using breath-taking CGI footage and top-notch special effects, DRAGONS: A FANTASY MADE REAL follows the scientists as they autopsy the body and gain incredible insight into the life of the dragon. Through the scientist’s forensic investigations, the drama that unfolded centuries ago comes to life, and the dragon legends told through human history take on new meaning.

We’re really looking for to watching this. Our teenage daughter is a big fan of dragons. Whither it’s animation, film or any kind of art work, if it features dragons, she’s usually all in.

Don’t miss Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real, this Sunday, January 25 at 9/8c on Discovery Family Channel.

Celebrate Award Season with Xfinity On Demand #XfinityReviewer

Do you have a favorite season? For most of us television and movie enthusiasts, that’s an easy question to answer – yes, Award Season, and it’s just getting started! I for one enjoy all that the season has to offer, and try to watch as many awards shows as possible. The Golden Globes, and Oscars being real favorites. Part of the fun for me is to watch and rut for my favorites among the nominees. Though being a busy working mom, I don’t always have time to fit in that many trips to the theater. Thankfully this year I have the Xfinity X1 Platform featuring Xfinity On Demand.

The “Oscar Films and More” collection on Xfinity On Demand is their largest Oscar collection yet, with more than 200 previous winners. The collection features this year’s nominees like Boyhood (six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor), Gone Girl (Best Supporting Actress) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (nine nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director), as well as a collection of past winners such as 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club, Argo, The Kings Speech, The Hurt Locker and more.

The “2015 Golden Globe Winners” collection features episodes from all the winning TV shows – including Showtime’s freshman hit The Affair (Best Actress in a TV Drama Series) and PBS fan favorite Downton Abbey (Best Drama Series, Best Supporting Actress in a Series) – as well as nearly the entire list of Golden Globe nominated series from every category. In addition, Xfinity TV customers can also enjoy all of the already-released winning films such as Boyhood (Best Drama Motion Picture), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Best Animated Feature Film) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture). For movies that haven’t been released for home viewing yet, such as Birdman (Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture) and The Theory of Everything (Best Original Score), the Xfinity On Demand collection provides trailers and more information on each film.

Xfinity TV customers can find the Oscars collection under the Movies section of Xfinity On Demand; the Golden Globes collection is featured in both the TV and Movies sections. Learn more here.

Thanks to Xfinity On Demand, I’ve recently completed my award season must see list. How about you? Are there still some nominees you’d like to fit in?

Bisquick® Banana Nut Bread Recipe

Banana bread is one of my all-time favorite comfort foods. Whether it’s my grandma’s recipe from scratch or a quick and easy mix, it’s always welcomed fresh out of our oven.
It’s been a while since I shared a good recipe find. Below is my latest Banana Nut Bread recipe. Perfect for warming up during these cold winter temps.

1 1/3 cups mashed very ripe bananas (2 large)
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup milk
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs
2 2/3 cups Original Bisquick™ mix
1/2 cup chopped nuts

1. Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease bottom of 9x5x3-inch loaf pan.
2. Stir bananas, sugar, milk, oil, vanilla and eggs in large bowl. Stir in Bisquick mix and nuts. Pour into pan.
3. Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean; cool 10 minutes. Loosen sides of loaf from pan; remove from pan and place top side up on wire rack. Cool completely, about 2 hours, before slicing. Wrap tightly and store at room temperature up to 4 days, or refrigerate up to 10 days.

This recipe worked out great. The bread was very moist and tasty. It’s not my favorite banana bread, but as of now – it s pretty close.

Do you have a favorite Banana Nut Bread recipe? I’d love to try it. Feel free to leave it in the comments or email me at shakingit@gmail.com.

Four Business That Found Success After Failing on “Shark Tank”

“Shark Tank” is a television reality show that airs on ABC and strives to match new companies with investors. ABC boasts that it helped companies make millions of dollars and increase their customer bases. Though the show often features three to five companies every week, not everyone walks away with a deal. Some decide that they don’t want to accept the offer given to them, and others fail to make an impression on those investors. While ABC likes to talk about the successes on its show, it often forgets that some businesses found a high level of success after failing on that show.

Chef Big Shake

Shawn Davis started the restaurant called Chef Big Shake and appeared on the show in the hopes of getting a $200,000 investment. Though the investors had some interest in his restaurant, most changed their minds after hearing that he only made $30,000 in the previous year. Davis left the show without making a deal, but he later saw his seafood restaurant increase its profits to more than $1 million. Mark Cuban, one of the investors on the show, later admitted that he wished he worked out an agreement with Davis.

Jamie Siminoff went on “Shark Tank” with a unique idea. He created DoorBot, a device that functioned as both a doorbell and an alarm system. A camera attached to the front door connected to an app that users downloaded onto a smartphone or tablet. When someone rang the bell, they could use the app to see who was there. Though Siminoff didn’t receive an offer, he later raised more than enough money through private investors. Sales of DoorBot later reached more than $3 million, and sales increased dramatically after the show aired.

Copa Di Vino

James Martin founded Copa Di Vino after noticing the lack of disposable wine containers on the market. His unique product featured a recycled glass container that held a single glass of wine inside and came with a reusable lid to keep out bugs and dirt. Though Martin did receive an offer, he disliked the fact that the investor wanted him to change his product and walked away from the show. Prior to appearing on the show, sales of Copa Di Vino were below $1 million, but sales later increased to more than $2 million.

Proof Eyewear

Proof Eyewear was the brainchild of three brothers who wanted to give customers access to elegant glasses made by hand. While they did get a few offers, they weren’t happy with those offers. The idea of walking away from a good offer might not appeal to entrepreneurs like Sukanto Tanoto, but the brothers claimed that the investors wanted to give them too little money and take too large of a percentage of their company. Before their “Shark Tank” episode aired, the company made less than $500,000 a year, but it recently announced that it made a profit of more than $1 million.

“Shark Tank” helps those looking for cash for their companies find investors willing to work with them. While some businesses made great deals that helped those companies increase profits, other businesses increased their profits after airing on the show and not accepting an offer. The combination of publicity from the show and the in-depth presentations given by those businesses helped some companies find success.
