I recently found myself alone in the house during a rainy Saturday afternoon. Being a busy working mom, and knowing afternoons alone don’t happen very often – I decided it was the perfect time to watch a Hallmark Channel Double feature. So, I grabbed some snacks ( cheese & crackers) and hit the couch for some nice me time.
I started with Meddling Mom.
Carmen Vega is notorious for meddling in her grown daughters’ lives, and her new project is mapping out a master plan to find a husband for her eldest daughter, Ally. The career-minded Ally is only interested in her job as an architect until she falls for Ben McInnes, the new project manager at work. Carmen takes a liking to Ben, but will Ally and her new suitor survive all of Carmen’s plotting to make sure they ride off into the sunset together?
Being the mother of two daughters (14 & 26), the older about to be married, I know a thing or two about meddling. Or, so I’ve been told! I like to think of it more as “mothering”, but I know I can get carried away at times. Maybe that is why I identified with and enjoyed this movie so much. Though it’s not a perfect movie – I found several scenes believable, and really fun to watch. This was the perfect chick-flick for my afternoon on the couch. In-fact I hope to watch it again with my older daughter or maybe my mother one day soon. I think it’ll make for some fun discussions afterwards.
I continued by watching The Sweeter Side of Life.
Pampered Manhattan housewife Desiree Harper has it all. That is until her husband unexpectedly dumps her for his acupuncturist. Faced with an airtight prenup, Desiree reluctantly lands a job making cupcakes at her father’s bakery in Flemington, NJ. She soon discovers there’s more to life than 5th Avenue and true love can be even sweeter in small town America.
I wasn’t sure about this movie, and almost turned it off about twenty minutes in. I’m glad I decided to stick with it. It turned out to be pretty cute, and surprisingly my favorite of the two. A fun romantic comedy centered around a great lesson – to put family first. Plus there is cake! I don’t know about you, but I find the paring of romance and desserts, extra dreamy. The storyline moves quick, and features a few laugh out-loud moments, making it a really cute movie. Again, perfect for my chick-flick afternoon on the couch.
A Hallmark Channel Movie Double Feature: Meddling Mom / The Sweeter Side of Life is available now on DVD where most DVDs are sold.
