Look Out – Here Comes Emma Kenney #EpicDay @FHEInsiders

I recently had the chance to phone chat with the delightful and energetic Emma Kenney, in promotion of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s release of Epic on Blu-ray and DVD (August 20, 2013). Emma is the voice of Marigold Girl in the fun family movie.

Though adults may recognize Emma from her role as Debbie on Showtime’s hit series Shameless, I had not previously watched the show. Judging from the two episodes I’ve viewed since speaking with Emma – she is quite the young scene stealer, and with a lot of talent to boot!

As our conversation started I noted that Emma is the same age as my daughter. Very much like my daughter, I was on the phone with a creative, friendly, and fast talking young teenager. Making me wish our call had been recorded to make this blog post a little easier.

Five things I learned about Emma Kenney during our phone conversation.

1. She works 6-7 months out of the year.
2. When not working she attends public school.
3. She still creates music videos, and movies in her backyard with her friends.
4. When she watches herself on screen, she consistently thinks of how she could have done the scene better.
5. Emma has been in thousands of student films.

What advice would you like to give young girls just starting out in the business?
Just go for it! Keep doing what you enjoy doing. Just keep submitting ideas, films. Keep trying out.

What do you think of all the child stars who end up on the wrong path? Do you feel pressure to stay on the right one?
Sad, just sad. I remind myself to always act like her mom is watching, because EVERYBODY could be watching. Sad to see young actresses I once enjoyed going down the wrong path. I want to show people not all child actors do bad things.

Which are you more comfortable with, acting in front of the camera or doing a voice over movie like epic?
Both really. They are both very different.

Did you work directly with the other actors, or did you film your voice overs separate?
Separate. I was really happy to work with the director, Chris Wedge. Oh My Gosh he is amazing!

That must have made for a different experience when you saw the film in it’s entirety.
Yes, it did. It was very exciting, it’s such a great story too.

If your career were to end today, what would you miss the most?
Being on set. Developing a character, planning and plotting how to portray the character. Where she’d be at in 10 – 20 years. Definitely being on set.

I would like to thank Emma Kenney for being so generous with her time. I really enjoyed our phone chat, and I look forward to seeing plenty of great things from this talented young lady on the screen, and also behind the camera in years to come. Note: Emma is also writer-director-producer with her own short film “The New Girl in Town,” being accepted as a Finalist in the New Jersey International Film Festival. She is the youngest director ever accepted to the festival.
