ABC’s “The Neighbors” A Hidden Jem

That silly, science fiction comedy series on ABC, “The Neighbors”, Yeah – it’s worth checking out.

About The Neighbors:
The series, set in New Jersey, revolves around a family that has relocated to a gated townhouse community called “Hidden Hills”. Upon their arrival, they discover that the entire community is populated by residents from another planet. Amongst their myriad quirks, these aliens identify themselves by the names of sports celebrities, patrol the community in golf carts, receive nourishment through their eyes and mind by reading books rather than eating, and cry green goo from out their ears. Since the aliens have assumed human form, they can also revert to their original appearances by clapping their hands above their heads. They have been stuck on Earth for 10 years, still awaiting instructions to return home.

Jami Gertz, Lenny Venito, Simon Templeman, Toks Olagundoye, Clara Mamet, Tim Jo, Ian Patrick, Max Charles, Isabella Cramp.

Dan Fogelman (the writer of Cars, Tangled, and Crazy, Stupid, Love), Director Chris Koch (Workaholics, Modern Family), Jeff Morton (Modern Family) and Aaron Kaplan (GCB, Terra Nova) executive produce this comedy.

During my recent visit to L.A. I had the opportunity to screen an upcoming episode of The Neighbors, followed by a surprise chat with Jami Gertz (Debbie Weaver), Max Charles (Max Weaver) and Creator Dan Fogelman. They could not have been nicer, taking time out of their busy schedule to talk about how The Neighbors came about, and why they feel good about working on the show.

Creator Dan Fogelman shared that his idea for the series came to him after visiting his parent’s close-knit retirement community. Now, I don’t know exactly what that says about his parents neighbors, but I’d sure like to visit them some time and see for myself.

I have been a fan of Jami Gertz since Square Pegs (showing my age), so this surprise chat was really a treat for me.

Jami talked about being a mom, on and off screen. Sharing, just as any other parent she struggles with her kids seeing inappropriate content on television, and how proud she is to be on a series you can actually watch with your kids without that worry. She seemed very down to earth and genuinely nice. Which really made my day!

I started watching The Neighbors near the middle of season two. Surprising to me, the aliens-next-door sitcom is pretty clever, and entertaining and just a whole lot of fun. Fun for the whole family.

You can catch The Neighbors on ABC, Friday nights at 8:30 PM EST!

Disclosure: I worked with Disney, Marvel, and Dreamworks as part of this promotional event. They provided me with travel, food and lodging in exchange for my coverage. All opinions expressed are still honest and my own.
