The Expendables 3, The Cast, The Excitement & Will They Make A Fourth?

The cast at Cannes 2014

Fans of gray-haired action franchise The Expendables should be able to see the third in the series by the time they read this. It’s been released in London and is due to hit theaters in the US on August 15th. The cast is amazing, adding to the line-ups from the first two – I can’t wait to see it!

Personally, I found that The Expendables 2 was great fun, I’m a big fan of exploding movies. The original movie from 2010 was built on nicely, with bigger and better explosions and funnier dialog. Bringing even more muscle – the third installment has Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford and Antonio Banderas joining existing cast members Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sly Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Jet Li.

There are a huge number of explosions of course, kicking off shortly after our aging heroes meet up with Mel Gibson’s character, Conrad Stonebanks, an arms dealer who likes to hide out in the deserted shell of a casino in some unspecified third world country. Early reviews suggest that, despite all the shoot-ups and effects, you might be better off playing a few hands of Blackjack in an online casino like, (Mel Gibson certainly could have done with a little practice there, maybe he wouldn’t have run out of cash when he visited a Casino in Vegas a while back) than wading through this movie, if it’s a raised heart- rate you’re looking for – though if you’re as old as the average age of the cast that’s probably not such a great idea.

Early Reviews

The rumours from across the Atlantic are that the joke The Expendables is based on is beginning to wear a little thin. It seems that cramming another bunch of retirement-age action heroes onto the screen has been subject to the Law Of Diminishing returns. Stallone’s co-written screenplay gives each star more or less equal screen time, but given the sheer number of them, it does tend to interfere with the smooth unfolding of the plot.

The theme of the movie, broadly speaking, is the teaming up of old and young, as the veteran members join up with the youngsters to defeat the evil Stone banks. Both older and younger cast members got into trouble while filming; Jason Statham found himself hurtling towards a 50 foot drop into the Black Sea when the brakes failed on his truck, only managing to survive by diving out of the open door. Stallone was injured as well, after an on-set fall left him with a metal plate in his back.

A fourth movie

It seems that whether you’ll want to see The Expendables 3 will depend mostly on how much you enjoyed the last two, and how much you want to see all those older guys on screen together. I have to say I’m actually looking forward to it; I’m expecting it to be cheesy, I’m expecting it to be pretty exciting, and I’m also expecting to be entertained. But, will they make a fourth?

I am excited to see this in theaters! We own the first two on DVD and they are played regularly in our house. Personally, I am a huge Jason Statham fan. I am excited to see Harrison Ford join the ranks and sad to see that Bruce Willis has not this time around. I really liked him as Church. I was surprised to learn that Kelsey Grammer was joining this round, but I like him, so I am excited to see how he does in this. Thanks for sharing!

I read that Jason Statham almost died making this movie. It has a lot of action and I am surprised that more actors are not injured from making these movies. I am so glad that Jason was able to get out of that truck! My nephew likes these movies and wants to see it. I like action movies now!!

Cheesy or not, I’ll be watching. There is a new TV station debuting tomorrow called GRIT TV. Looks like a lot of John Wayne the first day but Stallone, all those action heroes, will be on I’m sure. It’s not cable, so free to me.
