Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Set Visit & Interviews (part 1) #ABCTVevent #AgentsofSHIELD

Based on Marvel’s fictional government organization, S.H.I.E.L.D., this series shows that not all heroes have to be super.

About the series:

Agent Phil Coulson (Iron Man, Thor, The Avengers) recruits a new team to go into the field and handle any cases involving the strange and the bizarre. Accompanying him is an interesting, collected group of solo field agents.

During my recent trip to L.A., I was part of a select group of bloggers invited to visit the filming set of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. If you followed my trip on social media, than you might remember my afternoon “blackout” while on set. Blackout, meaning no photos, no updates, no check-ins. Top secret! It was so much fun.

We were not only treated to the coolest set tour ever, we were able to watch a scene being filmed, and interview several of the cast members, and show runners. It was such an amazing experience! From the series lead actors, to the team members working behind the scene, they were all so welcoming, and honestly seemed happy to have us there. One thing I noticed while there is how well they all got along with each other, supporting, bantering, and laughing. I’ve heard that some television sets are like a big family, in this case – I believe it. They were also very generous with their time when it came to talking with us. Below are some of the highlight’s from our first round of questions..

Henry Simmons (“Alphonso ‘Mack’ Mackenzie”), Brett Dalton (“Grant Ward”), Elizabeth Henstridge (“Jemma Simmons”), Iain De Caestecker (“Leo Fitz”).

How was it for you guys to find out Brett (Ward) was Hydra?
Brett: Yeah – I was very sad. They didn’t let me know before. They let me know the episode before, so there wasn’t a lot of heads up. I appreciate the Wikipedia where somebody said it, they let me know in the beginning of the season so I could subtly play it every scene… So, yeah, it was a big change – but I think it really, rounded out the character in a way… after you get all of the back story underneath, the pain and danger. I don’t know, it really fleshed him out – made him really fun to play.

Elizabeth: We were all mortified. We were shocked. And, we could only speak to each other about it. So we would call each other, how you doing? I don’t know, today’s hard. It was, it was tricky.

Iain: It’s still a pretty hard subject for me, so I don’t want to bring up the past.

What is more fun, playing the good guy or the evil?

Henry: I don’t see my guy as evil, I don’t. He’s doing what he thinks is best for S.H.I.E.L.D. The real S.H.I.E.L.D. You know, I don’t see him as being evil. But, I guess evil people don’t see themselves as evil.

Brett: Yeah, ditto… I feel that he’s also not an evil guy, it’s just that he made these choices along the way. Um, some of those choices people might frown on…

Which do you find harder to film, stunts or scientific dialog?
Henry: I haven’t had scientific dialog.
Iain: Oh yeah.
Henry: Not really. I mean, the stunts are too amazing! Well, I don’t like heights, so I’ll just put that out there. Only had a problem one time, I was like, no-no-no-no… that was tough.

Brett: You must hate shooting scenes when we’re flying, actually flying…

Henry: You know what, they were pretty easy because there is so much choreography in terms of flight…especially when we do stunts, we move really fast… So you have to make it fun.

Do you have a favorite scene that you’ve done?

Elizabeth: I always remember a scene that was really early on… We were all sitting on the back of the bus and we were watching the first 084 go up and explode. And that was the first time as a character, and an actor, I was like oh my god I’m here. Oh, this is happening. Like, we’re filming a TV show. That for me, that’s still my favorite.

We also had the chance to chat with Adrianne Palicki (“Bobbi Morse”).

Seems your character is really conflicted. Is she?
Adrianne: You know, she’s been part of this other SHIELD from the beginning, and she’s been with Gonzales, I mean, she saved his life, you all saw that. But, at the same time, she cares about these other people. And she doesn’t think Coulson is a bad person, she’s just concerned as to where some of his loyalties stand, and you know, alien blood and all of that…. We don’t know where she going with all of that, but she cares about these people. So, she’s definitely conflicted, and she’s trying to find her path. But at the end of the day she’s a soldier,a nd she’s been thinking that she’s been doing the right thing, this whole time, so now she’s starting to think, maybe these people aren’t being treated the way they should be treated. And, you know, she’s a little concerned. I think you’re going to be seeing that girl, a little bit more.

Do you do your own stunts?
Adrianne: I do, I do my own stunts. I mean, there’s stuff obviously I can’t do because of insurance problems. Like jumping through a plate glass window… But the fight stuff, is definitely what i like to do.

How do you train for your stunts? Any martial arts?
Adrianne: I did learn Jujitsu for [the film] John Wick. I take Muay Thai and box myself. I’ve been doing a lot of action shows, movies, for a very long time. So I’ve been very lucky to be trained by like Navy SEALS. I’ve gone through gun training and now it was the batons. I had never worked with those before. That was my new form of training for this.

What has been your favorite scene?

Adrianne: Oh, that’s easy. When Fritz confronts Ward. I honestly think he should be nominated for an Emmy for that scene. I bawl every time I see it…I think that Iain is one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with and that scene is just beyond for me.
