Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Set Visit & Interviews (part 2) #ABCTVevent #AgentsofSHIELD

Based on Marvel’s fictional government organization, S.H.I.E.L.D., this series shows that not all heroes have to be super.

 Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D.

During my recent trip to L.A., I was part of a select group of bloggers invited to visit the filming set of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I have since learned that we were the first group to visit the top-secret set. Which is pretty cool. The cast and crew were so accommodating, and welcoming. Just a great experience, and a day I will never forget.

I’ve been on movie and television sets before, but nothing as cool as this. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s filming location and sets look and feel just as they do on the show. It’s actually quit surreal.

It was as if we were visiting a top secret government building, where all kinds of top secret agents are doing top secret stuff to battle evil, and save the world. You could just feel the geek power.

Speaking of geek, I was totally geeked to sit inside the Quinjet, the quinjet used not only on S.H.I.E.L.D. but also in the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier. How cool is that!?

While on set, we were able to spend some time with Ann Foley – Costume Designer. She was nice enough to walk us through her job from an idea, to filming. She even took us on a tour of several closets full of previous and current cast costumes. She even had a few of her favorite, memorable costumes from the show on display for us. Amazing how much work goes into getting them just right, and customized for filming. Below are a few memorable quotes from our time spent with Ann.

Ann Foley – Costume Designer (ABC/Adam Taylor)

Every single person on the show pretty much, whether they have one line or they have a big arc, they come in and I dress them all.

We made five (Agent May’s silver sequin dress) because May was fighting herself in the episode, so we had one beautiful one for May, then we had one that she could fight in, so we sewed stretch panels inside so she could fight and do all of her movement. She had two stunt doubles and then Agent 33 was in one as well.

We often print on fabric and then we make each one of our dresses.

Not all of the costumes are custom. Shopping is a big part of outfitting the cast, too.

Ann estimated that approximately 30% of the clothing is custom made, but that it can vary widely from episode to episode.

What was one of her favorite moments?

Last season, when Coulson and May went undercover as FitzSimmons, I mean, probably the best fittings I’ve ever had in my life because Elizabeth has a very specific way of standing in her fittings, and Ming did that in the fitting photos for the cast. You could hear her laughing across the studio. It was wonderful. I was really fun.

While on set we were able to watch as Chloe Bennet (Skye) filmed a scene, and then later we were able to chat with her just a bit while she was between takes. Unfortunately it was only a couple of minutes, and then she had to return to filming, so I really don’t have much to share. But she could not have been more friendly, and I’m pretty sure she would have chatted for hours, had she been finished with her scene.

The other actors said that they found out only a week ahead of time they were turning ‘bad’. How about you and Lincoln here? How much time were you given?

Neither of us are bad. [Speaking of Skye and Lincoln]
