Max, is a film about a dog that helped US Marines in Afghanistan, returned to the U.S. and was adopted by his handler’s family after suffering a traumatic experience.

Max is a reminder that it’s not just two-legged members of the military who suffer the devastating effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) — military dogs are susceptible as well. The cast is lead by Josh Wiggins, Thomas Haden Church, Lauren Graham, Jay Hernandez, and Robbie Amell, but the true star of this movie is the dog. Watch the touching trailer below.

Five facts about America’s four legged heroes:

1. The United States War Dogs Association estimates that, since the beginning of their service, dogs have saved approximately 10,000 American lives.

2. Dogs can be used to track, detect bombs, weapons, drugs, and even attack the enemy.

3. In WWI, Sergeant Stubby, the most decorated War Dog in history, saved an entire company from a serin gas attack. He also met three presidents.

4. Dogs and their handlers alike have been known to need therapy after losing their partner in combat.

5. The dogs, like their military counterparts, often find service in law enforcement after their retirements, which occur at the ten year mark.

Before educating myself to write this blog post, I had no idea the lengths of heroism that these dogs bring to our military. Their commitment and courage is emotional to read about, and impressive at any standard.

My thoughts on the movie:
I recently found myself with a few hours of “me” time, and decided to spend it seeing Max. Being told in advance to “bring tissues” to a movie never steers me away from the theater. In-fact, seeing a nice story-telling, or emotional movie is one of my favorite ways to spend my “me” time. I found the cast very likeable, and felt they did a great job at moving the story along. The movie has an hour and fifty one minutes run-time, with very little drag. I honestly do not remember a time in the film that I felt bored. Though I don’t think Max will be winning all the awards this year, it did not disappoint me. I really enjoyed this movie. Did I pulled out the tissues? Yes, but only for a minute. Would I see the movie again? Yes, I look forward to watching it again on blu-ray with my family. I know our daughter is going to enjoy it as much as I did.

Max, rated PG is now playing in theaters nationwid. Find theater locations, showtimes and purchase tickets on Fandango.

  1. I can’t wait to see this movie. We have two German Shepherds, and they’re so loyal and protective. It’s such a sad but uplifting story. He needed family and his new master needed someone too. Military dogs save thousands of lives, and it’s sad that they’re still considered just “equipment” to some. They’re heroes as much as their handlers are.
