Love The Coopers, my thoughts on the movie

Love The Coopers follows the Cooper clan as four generations of extended family come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration. As the evening unfolds, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down, leading them all toward a surprising rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of the holiday. Rated PG-13. (CBS FILMS)

Love The Coopers in in theaters NOW. I was recently invited to attending an advanced screening of the movie.

Love the coopers movie

I have a real soft spot for holiday movies. Especially ones that center around large families. I find something fascinating about their bond, no matter how dysfunctional, and Love The Coopers offers plenty of dysfunction.

I found the movie to be very fast paced and entertaining. Though, not without it’s disappointments. I am big fan of Diane Keaton, even when she seems to be playing the same character in multiple films, it’s okay with me – I love that character. I’ll watch her in just about anything. Though I did enjoy the movie, Love The Coopers was a bit too cookie-cutter to be “great”. Worth seeing, but nothing I plan to see again.

What worked for me, and what didn’t. No spoilers!

The humor. It didn’t always work, but I laughed out-loud several times.
I felt as though I cared about the out-come of several characters in the film.
Aunt Fishy, I just love her. You will too.
The little twist, or detail reveal at the end. Cute. I didn’t see it coming.
Alan Arkin. He can deliver a line like no one else. He should be in every movie.

As much as I adore Diane Keaton and John Goodman, I felt no chemistry between them, and felt most of their scenes together were poorly written.
The awkward teenage boy, and his strange younger brother. I have nothing good to say about them.
The music scene. Predictable, and very not necessary.

If you’re looking for a feel-good, hilarious holiday movie, you will probably be disappointed. If you’re looking for a stressful, dysfunctional, yet often enjoyable holiday movie, this one is for you. Being a major fan of half of the movie’s cast, I’m giving it a generous 3 out of 5 rating.

(Love The Coopers, my thoughts on the movie) After reading the review i guess I will just wait and see this when it is released out on DVD. Sometimes it is just hard for a good Christmas movie to be made I guess.
