Our family includes two beautiful rescued cats. Raphael, and Harley may look a lot alike, but their personalities couldn’t be more different. Raphael came to us from a shelter, and is playful, silly, and easy going. Harley, was rescued from a home full of neglected cats, she is emotional, often standoffish, was not litter trained, Yes, you read that right, “she was not litter trained”. #yougottabekittenme! I had never heard of a cat that didn’t know how to use a little box. She responded to the litter box like it was a pot of boiling water. All four paws grasping for life. Instead she would use the bathtub. Everyday, she left a mess in the tub. This was a real problem. I had no idea where to begin, but thanks to a lot of reading, the help of some great online cat owner friends, and a good veterinarian, we were able to teach Harley how to use the box.

Kittens usually start learning to use the litter box at 3 or 4 weeks of age. It is important that a cat not wanting to use the litter box see a veterinarian. It can be a sign of a medical problem, like a UTI. If the cat has a clean bill of health and is still not using the litter box, here are a few tips that might do the trick. They, along with some a lot of patients worked for us.

how to litter train a cat

1.Keep the cat, and the box in a confined space for a few days. We used the bathroom. We took turns sitting on the floor and petting her so she didn’t feel alone. We also played with the litter a little, showing her it was nothing to be afraid of.

2.Keep the litter box clean. Use good, clumping, and odor fighting litter. Scoop out any mess as soon as you can. Some cats just hate a dirty box. I can’t say that I blame them. I would too.
3.If the cat is relieving him or herself in the same place everyday, like the tub, try putting the food there. Most cats wont eliminate where they eat.
4. Try different amounts of litter. Some cats dislike walking in a lot of litter.
5. Reward your cat with treats, affection, and playtime when they start using it. They just became the best cat in the whole world.

All you need is a littler box, a bag of treats, toys, a bag of good littler, like Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze, and a lot of patients. It can be done. It’s worth the effort, because the payoff is filled with unconditional love. Almost three years later, and Harley is still what I call a “picky pooper“. If the box is neglected she will still go in the tub. As long as we use good odor eliminating, clumping litter, and keep it scooped, we’re all good.

Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze combines two of my favorite products to eliminate the litter box odors. It does a great job. This makes me and everyone in our house happy. It’s actually pretty impressive, it works with a Borate Technology for superior ammonia control, which acts as an antimicrobial agent and also has a fresh lemongrass citrus scent. I also like that this is a clumping cat litter, which makes keeping the litter box clean for even the pickiest of cats (Harley) a whole lot easier.

Giving back
Not only did I discover a new product that I love for keeping our house smelling clean, but the generous people at Collective Bias and Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze also gave me the opportunity to make a $100.00 donation to the pet-related organization of my choice.

I decided to give my donation to the the Dearborn Animal Shelter. Without their hard work, and dedication, we wouldn’t have our sweet, and silly Raphael. The cutie that loves to curl-up inside everything he can possibly fit in.

She’s a cutie! I always forget you have cats, I only see Roxy on your blog :).

You cat is super cute! So happy that you finally got Harley to use her litter box! #client

  3. Your cats are so adorable. I love that you took cats who needed a good home (and a clean litter box). Harley sounds neurotic and I love her. In fact, if I were a cat I’d probably BE her. I’m such a cat person, and I think all the work you’re doing to train them properly is admirable. Well done.

  4. I am so thankful all of our cats have come litter box trained already!! Fresh step is an amazing cat litter to help cover up the smell of cats and keep the litter box clean as well. Those are some great savings at Sam’s Club on Fresh Step!

My daughter wants a cat, so I’m researching all I need to know beforehand. Thanks for writing this informative post. Potty training her was way different than it is “potty-training” a cat, lol. Your post makes it seem easy and doable, so I’m not as nervous or scared as I was before.

  6. Some people say black cats are bad luck but I’ve always found them rather cool.

  7. I don’t have a cat so I wouldn’t know the slightest thing about training a kitten…it seems to be way easier than training a puppy though, lol!

  8. We are a cat family, we have 2 cats we adore. The only thing I hate is the litter box stink. This looks liek a great option for us.

  9. It’s great that we have Febreeze to get rid of the foul odor of litter. I cannot really stand the awful smell of a house that has lots of cats. That’s also one of the reasons why my parents don’t like us to have pets in general. Borate technology sounds interesting!

  10. Great tips on litter training! My Jinx and Josie are loving their Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze too (they wrote a post as well). Raphael and Harley are certainly little cuties! )

It’s been a while since I had a kitten and a litter box. This is good info to know b/c the litter box smell is one reason why not to have one.
