Brooklyn, available now on blu-ray, Digital HD & DVD #BrooklynMovie

Brooklyn tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

I didn’t have the chance to see Brooklyn while it was playing in theaters, so I was really looking forward to watching it on Blu-ray. Every once in a while I get an evening to myself, and I like to spend it on some “me” time, like reading a good book, or watching a good storytelling movie. Watching Brooklyn was a perfect way to spend my most recent “me” time. The story is beautifully written, intelligent and with a refreshingly old-fashioned movie feel. A powerful performance by Saoirse Ronan, as I lost myself in her story. I’ve always been drawn to strong female led movies, and wish I had seen this one on the big screen. Emory Cohen is equally impressive as Tony, a young Italian plumber that brings new experiences to Eilis’s story. Is this love? Is this life? Was this the promise of America?

It’s not where we were born, but the choices we make that define us is the message of Brooklyn. I highly recommend this movie. Full of nostalgia, and rated PG-13, Brooklyn is a good movie to watch with family. Interesting, never boring, and plays out like a good book. There honestly is not a bad performance in it.
