Back to School Wardrobe on a Budget
If your family is anything like mine, shopping for a back to school wardrobe can put a strain on the purse strings. There are several things we do as a family to ease that strain and make the experience more enjoyable and affordable.
- The first thing we do is clean out the old clothes. This is a time to go through the closets and clean out what no longer fits or is simply no longer wanted.
- We opt to sell these items on one of many Internet sites that offer items at great prices to those you live locally. This is a great option for many, or you could have a yard sale or even sell them to a children’s consignment store.
- All of these options will allow you to make room for the new clothes and give you some extra cash to put towards the shopping.
Once you have sold the old, you are ready to begin the hunt for the new. The key is to bargain shop so you can get more for your money. Many stores will offer discounts on certain days for military families, educators, and more. Research your area and you are sure to find deals. Also many states offer tax free weekends which is a great way to save money. In order to really save money, you must plan ahead. Research discount days, clip coupons, and search sale papers.
Once you are in the store and shopping there are a few things you can do so you come away with a wardrobe that will last.
- First, when shopping for jeans, pants, or shorts, we stick with solids. Plain bottoms without too much embellishment are not only cheaper, but offer more versatility. I let my kids choose more embellished tops to add their own sense of style without breaking the bank.
- Also we tend to stick with short sleeve shirts. This way they are great for the beginning of school when it is warmer and then we simply add a long sleeve underneath when the weather cools down. This not only makes the shirt wearable for longer but gives it a nice layered look for the winter.
- When shopping for shoes, we try not to spend too much on one pair so they can be replaced throughout the year. Kids shoes wear out quickly and get filthy on the playground. A durable pair of shoes that can be washed are the way to go.
Happy Shopping!
