We made the switch and upgraded to the Xfinity X1 Platform #XfinityReviewer

We recently upgraded to the new Xfinity X1 Platform, and I can’t wait to share all of the details with you! Not just details on how we view home entertainment (though that has greatly improved), but how several features effect our budget, like adding an Xfinity house phone (yes, I said house phone) with Voice2Go has made it possible for us to cut our mobile data plan, while also adding some great security to our family. Details on how we are able to capture the best internet speed on all three floors of our home. This has not been an easy task in the past.

I hope you’ll be following along here on my blog, on Twitter and Facebook, as I share all of the details, trouble shooting and tips, and the highs and lows of our Xfinity X1 journey, including their huge On-demand system. Did you know you can actually purchase and download movies through Comcast?

First I’d like to share our experience of making the switch. I love that Comcast works around our schedule so there was no need to rush home from the office, worried we might miss the appointment. Our cable installer called to give us a reminder an hour before our scheduled appointment. When his previous appointment ran a few minutes over, he called again with an update and an apology. When he arrived he could not have been nicer. Very polite, and without even asking wore booties over his shoes – which was nice because we just had our carpets cleaned. After seeing that our previous cable company had split our cable lines several times, our Comcast installer was outside in the cold for well over an hour replacing them to give us the best possible signal. No complaints out of him! He then took all the time needed to hook up, and test our main box with DVR in the living room, a secondary box in our bedroom, and our phone service. Since the X1 system is different than anything we’ve had before, he took his time and went over every feature and detail, and then some. This made the switch really easy, and a lot of fun!

Watch for more Xfinity X1 blogging soon. I’m just getting started!

Walking With Dinosaurs @ The Palace of Auburn Hills Ticket Giveaway #Detroit

Dinosaurs once again roam the earth when the spectacular production, Walking With Dinosaurs The Arena Spectacular, based on the award-winning BBC Television Series, comes to The Palace of Auburn Hills for an eight-show engagement from August 6-10, 2014.

Walking With Dinosaurs The Arena Spectacular depicts the dinosaurs’ evolution with almost cinematic realism. The show has scenes of the interactions between dinosaurs, how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how the herbivores fended off their more agile predators.

This updated production will showcase changes to the dinosaurs based on the latest scientific research including the likely feathering of some species. Worldwide, more than eight million people have seen this show in 243 cities and over 2,000 performances.

Ten species are represented from the entire 200 million year reign of the dinosaurs. The show includes the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the terror of the ancient terrain, as well as the Plateosaurus and Liliensternus from the Triassic period, the Stegosaurus and Allosaurus from the Jurassic period and Torosaurus and Utahraptor from the awesome Cretaceous period. The largest of them, the Brachiosaurus is 36 feet tall, and 56 feet from nose to tail. It took a team of 50 – including engineers, fabricators, skin makers, artists and painters, and animatronic experts – a year to build the production.

“We take the audience on a journey back in time and show them how the dinosaurs might have actually looked in their prime – huge, sometimes frightening, sometimes comical monsters – that fought for survival every day of their lives,” said Director Scott Faris. “Our dinosaurs move exactly like they are real — with all the roars, snorts and excitement that go with it. The realism is mind-blowing!”

Walking With Dinosaurs will be at The Palace of Auburn Hills for an eight-show engagement from August 6-10, 2014.

Tickets at $59.50, $49.50, $39.50, $19.50 reserved at Palacenet.com, The Palace Ticket Store and all Ticketmaster locations. Tickets may be also charged by phone to American Express, Discover, Visa and MasterCard by calling 800.745.3000.

The park has a wide variety of new rides, shows and attractions all designed to help guests have their best day of the summer. The following is a Top 8 list of NEW things to see and do at Cedar Point this summer.

Lake Erie Eagles
Guests on Lake Erie Eagles will sit in one of eight ride carriages that are suspended from arms located more than 28 feet above the ground. As the ride begins its cycle, the carriages will swing outward simulating the sensation of flight. A paddle on the carriages will allow guests to alter their flight experience from mild to wild!

Known for their legendary Crabfries, this popular restaurant will also feature signature Philly Cheese Steaks and Lisa’s Blonde Lobster Pie. Chickie’s and Pete’s was recently named as one of the “Ten Best Sports Bars” in the country by USA Today.

52 new deluxe cabins will be added to Lighthouse Point this summer. These new overnight options can accommodate up to 10 people and will feature two full bathrooms, four flat panel televisions, a dorm-size refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, outdoor charcoal grill and picnic table. Later this summer, Cedar Point will take screaming to new heights when it opens its new SlingShot ride. Riders on SlingShot will be secured in an open-air two-person capsule before being launched nearly 360 feet into the sky at speeds of up to 62 mph! Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village #Detroit #Review

Happy Holidays! My name is Toni from My Book Addiction and I am thrilled to be posting on Five Dollar Shake today. Thank you so much for the invitation, Jenn!

I’ve always wanted to take my family to Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village. Every year we hear the fireworks from our living room and have always wondered what it would be like to go. Well, this year was a dream come true. It was a magical experience that none of us will forget. I was a little nervous because I have never been much of a winter person. You’d think living in Michigan for so long I would be used to it by now, but I am not a fan of cold weather, and it was only twelve degrees the night we went. Let me tell you, though.. it was beyond worth it. There were houses and other buildings along the way with different types of entertainment and demonstrations, so it was perfect. Whenever I got cold I would just pop into one and enjoy the show, then pop back out and continue along on our adventure.

Holiday Nights has carolers on nearly every corner, horse-drawn sleigh rides with a guitar-playing entertainer on each one, an outdoor ice rink, fantastic food, delicious hot chocolate. It was like being in a Christmas movie. My favorite part, and I know it was the highlight of my little girls’ nights as well, was seeing Santa Claus on Maple Lane. Not only did we get to see the big man up on that shining balcony, surrounded by Christmas lights, but Santa also called out to each of the children. When he said, “Oh, look, there’s Libby and Gabby! Merry Christmas to you both!” the look on their faces was nothing I’ve ever seen before. Gabby had asked me as we were approaching if he was the real Santa, and I said, “I don’t know.. let me get closer and see.” After he called out to them she turned to me with wide eyes and said, “It is the real Santa! He knows our names!!” If it hadn’t been so cold outside a tear may have escaped my eye. I’m sad to report that I didn’t get a good picture of Santa because my camera was frozen by that point, but there’s no way any of us will ever forget the experience.

Holiday Nights at Greenfield Village is the most enchanting way to celebrate the holidays. We will definitely be going again next year. I’m going to be sure to ask Santa for thermal underwear for the whole family, too!

Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village, Dec. 6-8, 13-15, 20-22 and 26-28. Starting at 6:30 PM.

Movie Review – Escape from Planet Earth

Escape from Planet Earth is the animated tale of the hero Scorch Supernova who enjoys exploring neighboring planets and makes discoveries for his people, a blue alien race from the planet Baab. After he had rescued several kidnapped children, he was widely regarded throughout the planet. Scorch then decides to venture to the ‘Dark Planet’, planet Earth, on yet another exciting exploration in response to an apparent call for help. Unfortunately, he finds himself caught up in the trap of an evil and vengeful General Shanker after his arrival and finds himself in Area 51 with other captured aliens. It is then up to Scorch’s nerdy, rule loving brother Gary to come to his rescue. Now Available on DirecTV On Demand. If you haven’t signed up for DirecTV visit http://www.SaveOnTVDirect.com for special deals on packages and signing up.

The Canadian flick starred several famous actors and actresses.

Scorch Supernova, the adventurous hero who finds himself trapped on Earth, was the voice of Brenden Fraser.
Gary Supernova, the nerdy brother who is forced to go on a rescue mission for his brother was played by Rob Corddry.
Kip Supernova, the son of Gary Supernova, was played by the young Jonathan Morgan Heit.
Kira Supernova, the wife of Gary Supernova, was played by Sarah Jessica Parker.
Lena, the head of the organization Scorch works for, known as BASA, was played by Jessica Alba.
General Shanker, the evil and vengeful captor of Scorch, was played by William Shatner.

When the Supernova family back on Baab realizes that Scorch has been captured, Gary’s young son Kip becomes determined to and rescue his uncle, Gary discourages him and the boy leaves very upset. When Gary goes to try and talk to his son he finds that Kip has snuck out to try and launch a rescue mission. Gary manages to stop him just in time, but realizes that he needs to go in his place to rescue his brother.

After arriving on Earth, Gary finds himself face to face with General Shanker. He discovers that Shanker is so evil because when he was younger three aliens had accidently killed his father. For his revenge, he is determined to destroy all the alien planets with a laser built by the other captured aliens.

It is also revealed that Lena, the head of Scorch’s organization of BASA, is in fact an ally of Shanker and believes herself to be in love with him. She is sending him blutonium, a power source. Scorch works to rig the blutonium to destroy the laser the aliens had built. Back on BASA, Kip and Kira manage to subdue Lena. Scorch and Gary escape from Area 51 and find Scorch’s ship and make their way back home.

The movie did not fare too well with critics, who were mostly disappointed with the script but noted that the acting was relatively strong. Reviewers did note a few laughs that were thrown in, but said that most adults would find the movie too drawn out. Some did find the movie mildly entertaining, especially for the younger audience that the movie was intended.
