Bon Jovi’s New Single #BecauseWeCan

I’ve been a Bon Jovi fan since high school. I remember hearing Runaway, and literally running to the record store excited to hear what else was on the album (7800° Fahrenheit). The eighties were a fun time for music and Bon Jovi was a huge part of that. With their talent for story telling and great sounding rock and roll, my friends and I just couldn’t get enough. Then came the nineties. When most of the popular music turned dark, and grungy, Bon Jovi’s release of “Keep the Faith” was like a breath of fresh air to me. A great reminder that rock and roll does not have to be dark, depressing or violent to be great. I can honestly say that Bon Jovi has continued to put out some of my favorite music through the years. “Have a Nice Day”, and “Lost Highway” are a couple of my go-to cd’s, especially while driving.

Bon-Jovi-Sepia-800

Just when I thought I couldn’t love Bon Jovi any more, they go and write a great song like this! These days with so many people facing hard times, Bon Jovi’s new single “Because We Can,” is like another breath of fresh air. Embracing optimism and reminding us all to do what we can – because we can.

Below is a lyric video of Because We Can, please take a few minutes to watch it.

I love this song! It lifts me up, and puts me in a great mood every time I hear it. For me, it’s not just another awesome Bon Jovi song (which it totally is), it’s a great reminder of what is important. After experiencing some pretty hard times over the past five years, my husband and I work hard at staying positive, at staying strong, and to keep moving forward together. At enjoying life. Why – because we can!

The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine Now On DVD & Blu-Ray! #Giveaway

The newly restored and remastered movie Yellow Submarine staring The Beatles was just released on Blu-Ray and DVD on June 5th.

“Once upon a time… or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland, a place where happiness and music reigned supreme. But all that was threatened when the terrible Blue Meanies declared war and sent in their army led by a menacing Flying Glove to destroy all that was good. Enter John, Paul, George and Ringo to save the day! Armed with little more than their humour, songs, and of course, their yellow submarine, The Beatles tackle the rough seas ahead in an effort to bring down the evil forces of bluedom.”

My thoughts:
What feels like a series of trippy shorts, is more a product of its time. The 60′s! Yellow Submarine mixes photographs with animation in a highly unconventional way. If you haven’t seen it, it is something to see. Very different than anything I’ve seen. At one point, The Beatles are transformed into little kids and then old men. Sounds crazy? it is, but somehow it works.
Though I don’t consider myself a Beatles Fan, the music and some of the visuals sure took me back to my childhood. I found myself humming along and enjoying songs I didn’t even know I knew. I really enjoyed the special features.

Special features include: Behind-the-scenes photos, a nice documentary, the Original theatrical trailer and more including several interviews.

If you’re looking to capture some of the 60′s or to purchase a gift for any Beatles Fan, then this is definitely a purchase to consider.

I also have the pleasure to giveaway one DVD copy of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine to one lucky Five Dollar Shake reader. Simply enter using the Rafflecopter widget below!

ACT OF VALOR Blog Post & #Giveaway

This giveaway is now closed.

IF YOU’RE NOT READY TO GIVE UP EVERYTHING, YOU’VE ALREADY LOST

The only easy day was yesterday. In the Bandito Brothers’ ACT OF VALOR, an elite military force, portrayed by active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs, carries out an impossible mission with insane courage and incredible teamwork in one of the most gripping and emotionally charged movies of the year. A fictionalized account of real life Navy SEAL operation, ACT OF VALOR features a riveting story that takes audiences on an adrenaline-fueled, edge-of-their-seat journey.

When a mission to recover a kidnapped CIA operative unexpectedly results in the discovery of an imminent, terrifying global threat, an elite team of highly trained Navy SEALs must immediately embark on a heart-stopping secret operation, the outcome of which will determine the fate of us all.

In ACT OF VALOR we are able to see a group of active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs lead its troops to victory. In this feature we will take a look back at other military leaders in film who have led their men courageously, including Sergeant First Class William James (Jeremy Renner) in The Hurt Locker and Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) in Top Gun, all while giving the audience some eye-candy.

COLONEL A.J. BULLARD

In Red Tails, Terrence Howard plays Colonel A.J. Bullard, one of the fearless leaders of the Tuskegee training program who has to fight for his pilots to be treated as equals against their White counterparts in the midst of World War II. Through the guidance of Colonel Bullard, his men are able to participate in several successful operations, including escorting bomber crews without any major casualties. The triumph of his men in their missions allowed Colonel Bullard to negotiate for his team to receive new planes instead of flying the worn-out aircrafts they were previously provided with.

SERGEANT FIRST CLASS WILLIAM JAMES

Sergeant First Class William James, played by Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker, is a war veteran who arrives as the new team lealer is the US Army’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit during the war in Iraq. His main responsibilities lie in detonating bombs and disarming improvised explosive devices, otherwise known as IEDs. Though his maverick methods and attitude clashes with those of his team members, James never leaves his team behind, including when one of them gets captured by the enemies.

LT. PETE “MAVERICK” MITCHELL

In one of his more famous roles in his career, Tom Cruise plays Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun, a young Naval aviator who gets sent to an elite US flying school, called Top Gun, for advanced fighter pilots but his reckless attitude annoys and impresses his instructors, one of whom he starts a relationship with. When one of Maverick’s friend dies during a flight, Maverick becomes affected by it and he decides to return back to Top Gun after completing his program to become an instructor.

CAPTAIN RAFE MCCAWLEY

Directed by Michael Bay, Pearl Harbor stars Ben Affleck as Captain Rafe McCawley who along with his best friend, Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett) joins the US Army Air Corps. In the midst of the second World War, McCawley volunteers to serve with the Royal Air Force’s Eagle Squadroms in England where his plane eventually gets shot down and his team presumes he is killed in action. McCawley’s unexpected return forces him to realize that everything has changed while he was away – his best friend Danny is now dating his once-girlfriend and Japan has just bombed Pearl Harbor – bringing the US directly into the war.

ANTHONY SWOFFORD

Based on former Marine Anthony Swofford’s best selling autobiographical book, Jarhead tells the story of Swofford’s pre-Desert Storm experience. Swofford enlisted with the Marines in the late 1980s, going through boot camp where he was trained to become a sniper. Swofford and his peers gets sent to Saudi Arabia in the front lines of battle under the heat of the blazing sun where their enemy can’t always be seen and combat only happens every so often against hours of sheer boredom.

An Interview W/ Billionaire Entrepreneur Mark Cuban & A Giveaway

This giveaway is now closed.

Mark Cuban is an American success story! You may recognize his name as the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Landmark Theatres, Magnolia Pictures, or as a part-time “shark” investor on the television series Shark Tank. He is also the chairman of the HDTV cable network HDNet(one of our favorites, thank you Sunday concerts!)HDNet Movies Kid Scene is also a favorite of ours during our Friday Family Movie nights.

I’d say Mark Cuban is not only pretty busy, but pretty hard to miss. I have a rare opportunity to share with my readers an in-depth interview with Mark Cuban on his new book titled “How to Win at the Sport of Business”. The book details his story of struggle to success.

Also, don’t miss a chance to score free Landmark Theater tickets at the end of the interview.

Many women who want to start a business are struggling to make ends meet but you argue in your book, that some of the best businesses took little to nothing to start.  Why do you encourage entrepreneurs not to wait for financing to start?

Because effort is always more important than cash.

There are many young moms who are just beginning their lives and can relate to you when you said you were sharing a small apartment with 6 people and sleeping on the floor.  How can someone keep their eye on the prize when they’re living on Ramen noodles?

Who cares how you are living today? I loved every minute of living in that dump. The low rent and utilities and eating Mac n’ Cheese all the time allowed me to afford the startup of my business. Instead of paying myself much, I could put it in to my business.

You knew Michael Dell of Dell Computers before he was the Michael Dell. What can you say about being nice to people on the way up?

It’s a whole lot easier to be nice to people than not to be. There are times when you have to be tough, but a smile not only goes further, but it makes you feel better about yourself as well.

You encourage entrepreneurs not to hire a public relations firm, Mark. How did you get the word out about your eBook?

I tweeted, posted on Facebook, [used] Google Plus and responded to emails. Nothing more.

One of my favorite parts of your book, How to Win at the Sport of Business, that completely broke my heart was when your ex-secretary robbed your first company of over $83,000, leaving you only $2000 after a year of work.  If there are moms out there that have lost everything, what advice do you have for them to pick themselves back up?

Keep working. Don’t feel sorry for yourself because it won’t do any good.

Looking back, destiny seemed to lead you from one opportunity where you would learn a life skill to another. Do you believe in fate or luck and how much of that has to do with hard or smart work?

There were a lot of things I didn’t write about. So, it’s not necessarily a direct jump from one skill to another. Starting and running a business can be a lot of long hours. You just have to get after it and not let up.

You were seemingly unfocused and not sure about what you want to do when you were younger. What advice do you have to parents who are worried if their child will ever be somebody?

No amount of worrying is going to change things for them. They have to figure it out for themselves. At some point, it is theirs to do or not do.

Where can can my readers easily get a copy of your eBook, How to Win at the Sport of Business?
Anywhere eBooks are sold: Amazon, BN.com, and sites that support independent bookstores too.

How would you like to score free tickets to any Landmark Theater? To be entered visit Landmark Theaters online and then leave a blog post comment below naming a film that you’d like to see. One winner will be chosen and contacted by email on December, 19, 2011.

Neat Containers Review & Giveaway

This giveaway is now closed.

I recently took on the job of organizing our basement. It’s been filled with piles of books, art supplies, and holiday decorations for as long as I can remember. Getting it in shape was not an easy job. Looking at it now, it’s become a place I can be proud of.

I was sent a large assortment of Neat Containers to help me tackle this difficult job. Neat Containers are great for organizing just about anything around your house – shoes in your closet, the kitchen pantry, holiday decorations, toys and books in the kids’ playroom, or arts & crafts supplies. The see-through storage system is designed to make the most of any size space – from the tiniest NY apartment to the most lavish walk-in closet.

What makes Neat Containers so unique and valuable is that it is “the only clear storage system that lets users remove and open individual pods from each stack without disturbing or collapsing nearby stacks or rows”. This was a great help to me when it came to organizing our daughters art supplies. Now, there will be no more guessing and removing lids to find what she needs. We are impressed with Neat Containers and the system we put in-place, that I’m already planning my next organizing job – the attic!

A funny “How-To” assemble video is located here – it literally takes two minutes to assemble the Neat Containers – they lock together.

They really are as easy to use as they look!

One lucky Five Dollar Shake reader will receive a Small 20 Piece Combo Kit from Neat Containers (a $47.99 value!) of their own to try. To be entered simply visit www.neatcontainers.com and leave a comment below saying which product you would like to try.
One winner will be chosen and contacted by email on November 23, 2011.

Water for Elephants Review, Novel/ DVD Bundle Giveaway

This giveaway is now closed.

Water For Elephants is a dark, violent, yet beautiful love story. It’s a gorgeous film to look at, and an easy one fall into. It stands out as one of my favorites of 2011, if for nothing else for it’s unique style of telling the story of a passionate love triangle. Going in I wasn’t convinced on the casting, but was fast sold the undeniable chemistry of these actors. Pattinson really holds his own, and at times fills the screen with a surprising strong percents. Not an easy task next to the likes of Reese Witherspoon, and Christoph Waltz. I enjoyed this movie much more than I expected. I now wish I would have taken the time to see it on the big screen.

LIFE IS THE MOST SPECTACULAR SHOW ON EARTH

Based on Sara Gruen’s epic novel about forbidden love, and directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Francis Lawrence (Constantine), WATER FOR ELEPHANTS stars Robert Pattinson as Jacob, a man devastated by the sudden death of his parents at the height of The Depression. When Jacob abandons his veterinary studies and stows away on a train carrying circus performers, his life is changed forever. Hired as a veterinarian to care for the circus’ animals, Jacob is temporarily filled with the promise of an exciting life that comes with a traveling circus troupe.

However, as he falls in love with the star of the show, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), they become prey to the circus’s owner, Marlena’s abusive husband August (Christoph Waltz). With their love on the line, the circus begins to crumble from within, and Jacob and Marlena come to a crossroads that will forever change their destiny.

For your chance to win a prize bundle including Sara Gruen’s novel and a copy of the WATER FOR ELEPHANTS DVD, simply answer the following question:

Who directed WATER FOR ELEPHANTS?

  • Christoph Waltz
  • Richard LaGravenese
  • Francis Lawrence

One winner will be chosen and contacted by email on November 8, 2011.
