Laine Billings Hanson on trial vice president the contender movie 2000 Joan allen

05. Frost/Nixon (2008)
A historical drama film based on the 2006 play of the same name by Peter Morgan which tells the story behind the Frost/Nixon interviews of 1977.

04. All the President’s Men (1976)
Academy Award-winning political thriller based on the 1974 non-fiction book of the same name by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two journalists investigating the Watergate scandal for The Washington Post.

03. JFK (1991)
American political thriller that examines the events leading to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and alleged subsequent cover-up through the eyes of former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garriso.

02. The American President (1995)
Comedy-drama about a widowed US president and a lobbyist who fall in love. It’s all aboveboard, but “politics is perception” and sparks fly anyway.

01. The Contender (2000)
When the sitting Vice President dies, Senator Laine Hanson is chosen by the President to be the first woman to hold the office. The selection meets with opposition from members of both parties, in particular a powerful political adversary who will seemingly stop at nothing to discredit her. Her confirmation hearings set off a firestorm of controversy as shocking secrets from Hanson’s past are revealed, threatening her personal life as well as her political future.

I probably could have listed a dozen movies! Have you seen any on my list? Have one to add? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

I haven’t seen your 1st and 2nd top picks, actually. I think we watched JFK and All of the President’s Men in school. Frost/Nixon was excellent, as I recall.

I’m sure I could add to this list but can’t think of any right now, lol.

Dave! Love, love it. I’m with you on American President as well. I enjoyed Absolute Power with Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman. A bit different, but good.
