From Scott Cooper, the critically acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart, comes a gripping and powerful drama about family, fate, circumstance and justice. Russell Baze (Oscar® Winner Christian Bale*) leads a dead-end life – he works a meaningless steel mill job all day, and cares for his terminally ill father at night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from Iraq, and lured into one of the Northeast’s most ruthless crime rings and mysteriously disappears. When the police fail to solve the case, Russell puts his life at risk in order to seek justice for his brother. This gripping film features a knockout cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana and Sam Shepard.
I didn’t see Out Of The Furnace when it was in the theaters. Not because I wasn’t interested, but it seemed to open, and then quickly disappear from our area. So, I was really excited to receive this Blu-ray for review.
I have always enjoyed a well made story telling film. And this one, did not disappoint. Out Of The Furnace is a well crafted film, that tells the dark, violent story of a good man, trying to deal with a series of very bad circumstances. The film features a very talented cast, and stunning cinematography.
There are a few major plot turns I didn’t think would happen, and a few I really hoped wouldn’t happen. I love that Scott Cooper laid the story out, without worry of glossing it over, or fitting in a “happy ending”. Unlike a lot of big budget movies today. I know that some movie goers complained of the movie being too slow. I disagree, I could have watched more. The ending left me wondering, thinking and wanting the story to continue. Which to me, is a sign of a very good movie.
Dark, yes, violent, yes, sad, yes, but a beautiful display of talent. That is how I feel about Out Of The Furnace. Easily makes my list of this year’s favorite films.
I also really enjoyed the Blu-ray bonus features.
