In the nail-biting third season of The Americans, Philip and Elizabeth Jennings’ (Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell) personal and professional worlds collide like never before. Exposure of their real identities as Russian spies looms as their friendship with FBI agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) grows. Meanwhile, Stan’s past involvement with a double agent shakes up the bureau. And as the Jennings’ assignments grow riskier and more ethically questionable, they face mounting pressure to induct Paige (their teenage daughter) into the KGB.
I recently received FX’s The Americans season three on DVD to review. To be fair, I should disclose that my husband and I have been watching this series from the pilot. To say we are fans, would be an understatement.
Our thoughts on season three:
The Americans remains one of the best-written shows on television today. With layered story-lines, this series twist together the best in spy action, politics, social issues, and family drama into a slow burn, heart pounding story, like no other series I have ever seen. Season three was no exception. Like many of the best character-driven shows on television, The Americans season three plays like a good game of chess, as it carefully moves around, setting up for some devastating blows rather than constant pay-offs. As they move, each character is drawn into a deeper, and sometimes darker place during season three. One more intense than the other. All exciting. The Americans, it is so well written, well directed, and acted, that I am hard-pressed to say anything negative about this series. For me, the only issue is the complexity of the plotting. Once in a while, we have to pause the episode so my husband can explain it to me.
I enjoyed reliving The Americans season three on DVD. I can’t believe how many new details I caught the second time around. I was just as excited over the story-lines, and I still covered my eyes and cringed during the same scenes (hello suitcase, hello bad-tooth). I also really enjoyed the DVD’s special features including deleted scenes and a featurette titled “The Cold War for Paige”. Paige! I can not wait to see where her story-line goes in season four.
If you are not watching FX’s The Americans you are totally missing out on some good television. I know this level of drama is not for everyone, but I highly recommend checking it out. Available for purchase now!
Three reasons you should be watching FX’s The Americnas
- Nostalgia. FX does a great job at recreating the 80’s. Each set, hairstyle, and outfit is like a look back into a family photo album.
- Chemistry. The cast has great chemistry. Staring, support and even the guest-stars, all fit so well together.
- Girl-power. The women in this series are no joke. Yes, Kerri Russle kicks major ass, but Annet Mahendru, Allison Write, Margot Martindale and Holly Taylor also bring their A-game to the outstanding series.
